I Should Have Knocked on Wood

As I finished writing this blog post, I realized I jinxed myself by the comment I made in my last post that said, "nothing too serious to take her to urgent care... yet"

15 months and 9 days old and Kaydriana had her first trip to the ER on 8/19/11. It started the day before. I had the day off and was enjoying it by myself, reading and doing laundry when I got a call from the daycare at about 2pm. They said Kaydriana had a temperature of 103 after her nap. I got her home, gave her a lukewarm bath and some children’s Tylenol. Her temp went down, she ate a pretty normal dinner and went to bed at the normal time of about 730.

The next morning she slept in a bit so at 630am I took a shower (by myself, yay!) and start my second loaf of banana bread (for the bake sale for the Heart Walk). She finally wakes up and she doesn’t look like she is feeling well. I take her temperature and it’s 102. For her to have a temperature in the morning is a big deal because it typically only happens in the afternoon. So crying baby in hand, I call in sick “kincare” to work. Poor Kaydriana doesn’t really want to eat or drink anything, I get some more baby acetometophin, pedialite drink and popsicles and she doesn’t want any of it. She just wanted to snuggle. I put her down for a nap and she didn’t sleep well, which is not like her. Then for the rest of the day she was wining, wouldn’t drink anything, barely ate a few bites and fell asleep by her toy chest. She woke up, fell asleep on me on the couch, and got woken up when Tim got home. He went to the gym and she fell asleep on me again. When she woke up about 45 min later her ears were so red and she was burning up. As I took her pants off to check her temperature I could see her body was all red. Then the scariest thing: her temp said 104.9! I gave her acetometophin, and called Tim who was still at the gym while I got a bath ready for her. I asked him to check Google to see what it says about that temperature and he called me back right away; we needed to take her in. We have an urgent care about 1.5 miles away (ideal place to take her so we only had to pay the normal $15 co-pay). Tim beat me there, told the front desk person what Kaydriana’s temp was and she told him we should take her to Childrens. Well, since we have the brand new Swedish ER in our back yard, we raced back up the hill and took her there. Thankfully it had been about 20-30 minutes since I drugged her and just a few moments from her lukewarm bath, so by the time the nurse checked her forehead temp, it was down to 99.9, so clearly what I had done helped.
She cried! She doesn’t usually have an aversion to strangers, but she hated the doctors and nurses. She freaked out when they put the pulse monitor on her toe. Daddy tried to point out that her toe glowed, but she hated it! They asked me all the normal questions and finally got to checking on her and turns out she had a double ear infection. I was relieved to know what was causing her the pain and fever because then we knew what we were up against.
I LOVE the fact that within just a few miles from us we have state of the art facilities that allowed us to know within 32 minutes that our baby was going to be okay.
My childhood was filled with memories of waiting for hours in the ERs waiting room and hours to be seen by a doctor. How tough my mom had it!
When we were given the prescription and were leaving, Kaydriana was given a pink beanie baby bear that I promptly named E.R.
The next day she was in good enough spirits to enjoy the sun at Lake Sammamish and today she was even better. We discovered she also has her two upper eye teeth coming in, so no wonder she doesn’t want to eat!
This next week, Kaydriana will be home with me since Nana is in Alaska with Aunt Jennifer. I’ll stay with her until 430 until daddy comes home and I’ll work until 11.
This is our final week of working Sundays and 2-11pm shifts, which I’m sooo excited about! More family time! Unless Tim gets the Woodinville job in which he’ll work Saturdays, but we’ll make the most of it.
I don’t think there will ever be anything that can change the way I feel about motherhood. It’s the most amazing job to have in the world, but that feeling of not being able to make your baby feel better is so heartbreaking!
